The Purpose
TEACHERS IN AUSTRALIA ARE REPORTING UNMANAGEABLE WORKLOADS, LONG HOURS, AND HIGH LEVELS OF STRESS.
These are driven largely by administrative and compliance demands. In the classroom, educators are navigating increasingly complex environments, including diverse learning needs and behavioural challenges, often with limited support.
90%
of Australian teachers report experiencing moderate to severe levels of stress1
Nearly
70%
saying their workload is unmanageable. Highlighting widespread wellbeing challenges in the profession1
85%
say they spend too much time dealing with student behaviour issues2
47%
of Australian teachers consider leaving within their first year in 2023, up sharply from 14% the previous year3
These pressures are contributing to burnout and growing numbers of teachers considering leaving the profession early, making retention a critical national issue.
1. UNSW: Teacher’s depression, anxiety and stress at 3 times the national norm, 2025.
2. AEU: Complex needs increase the load, 2025.
3. Black Dog Institute: Teacher mental health and burnout could halve workforce, 2023.
The Four Pillars of IAT
Behind every thriving school community are teachers who feel supported, valued and inspired.
Too often, professional development focuses on compliance, data and outcomes, while neglecting the formation of the person behind the profession.
